American Airlines has stated, that a few hundred flights are currently unassigned to pilots. The carrier is cooperating with the unions, offering its pilots up to 150 percent of their normal hourly wages to work over the Christmas holidays the number of open flights should decrease in the next days.

In a statement the carrier further explains, that it has not cancelled any flights: “We have more reserve pilots on hand in December than normal months and they provide us with the ability to fly many of the trips that are currently uncovered. We have not canceled any scheduled flights in December and will continue to work to ensure both our pilots and our customers are cared for.”

American Airlines is one of the biggest US carriers, operating nearly 6700 flights per day from its hubs in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Washington, D.C.

Some months ago, the European low-cost carrier Ryanair was forced to cancel several flights due to a similar scheduling fault.
