In 2016, the carrier announced the order for the aircraft, which is valued at $224.6 million at list prices. Back then, the carrier stated: "The 787 Dreamliner will be the flagship aircraft as we renew and grow the Air Tanzania fleet. We aim to establish our long-haul capability by starting flights to Europe, Asia and the U.S.A over the coming years and the 787 is the perfect aircraft to achieve this ambition."

Air Tanzania’s first Dreamliner wears the registration 5H-TCG and arrived in Dar-es-Salaam in the afternoon. The aircraft is on lease from the Tanzanian Government Flight (TGF). According to aviation media, the government has ordered a second airframe as well, which is due to be delivered in 2020.

In August last year, Air Tanzania confirmed that it seeks to use the B787-8 on long-haul destinations like Mumbai, Guangzhou or Bangkok. Furthermore, African cities such as Harare and Lusaka will be served by the aircraft. The arrival of the 787 also marks the begin of crew-training flights to Mwanza and Kilimanjaro.

The carrier expects to take delivery of two Airbus A220 (former Bombardier CS300) aircraft soon, to further advance in its fleet renewal plan.

Air Tanzania is the flag carrier of Tanzania and is based in Dar-es-Salaam. The carrier was founded in 1977 and established an operational hub at Julius Nyerere International Airport. Currently, the state-owned airline operates with a fleet of six aircraft, including one Bombardier CRJ 100, four Dash-8s and one Boeing 787-8. Nine cities are being served in two countries.
