Amazon has announced its first-ever purchase of Boeing 767-300 aircraft, as the giant is seeking to further expand its business. The carrier has purchased 11 aircraft from carriers WestJet and Delta Air Lines. The aircraft are expected to join the fleet in 2021 and 2022.

Sarah Rhoads, Vice President of Amazon Global Air commented: “Our goal is to continue delivering for customers across the U.S. in the way that they expect from Amazon, and purchasing our own aircraft is a natural next step toward that goal [...] Having a mix of both leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to better manage our operations, which, in turn, helps us to keep pace with meeting our customer promises.”

Of the 11 aircraft, four are coming from WestJet, which are currently undergoing passenger-to-cargo conversion. WestJet took delivery of their Boeing 787 Dreamliners in 2019 and 2020 and was therefore able to phase out the aging 767 aircraft.

The remaining aircraft are coming from Delta Air Lines and will enter Amazon Air´s cargo network in 2022, the company stated. Delta too is currently modernizing its fleet by throwing out aging Boeing aircraft like the 757, 767 and 777-200. In return, Airbus Aircraft like the A350 XWB, new A330neos and A320neo Family aircraft are making the fleet younger again.

Over the past years, Amazon has constantly invested in growing its freighter aircraft fleet. Most aircraft are leased from companies like Atlas Air or Air Transport International. This latest purchase is the first of its type and means Amazon will be the full owner of the aircraft.

Last year, Amazon launched its first-ever international air hub at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany along with regional air operations at several U.S.-American airports. Especially in regard of the current air freight demand during the pandemic, this fleet expansion makes sense for the company.

Amazon Air is currently operation national and international cargo flights with two aircraft types. The company is operating 22 Boeing 737-800 aircraft for national and shorter routes, while the 44 767-300 freighters are being deployed on international routes or on routes with high demand.
