Flight DL744, from New York LaGuardia to Boston, was the first flight that was performed by Delta Air Line´s latest aircraft, the Airbus A220-100. The entry into service of the state-of-the-art narrow-bodied jet marks an important milestone for the airline.

Over the coming years, the carrier hopes that the A220 will become an important part of the airline´s regional fleet. As first U.S.-Airline to operate the aircraft, Delta awaits delivery of 90 A220s in total, with four A220-100s already being delivered. The airline plans to fly with a fleet of 40 A220-100s and 50 A220-300s in the coming years.

"We have big plans for this aircraft," said Chuck Imhof, Vice President — New York and Sales, East. "It will be an integral part of our future domestic fleet and will deliver an experience our customers will look forward to every time they fly."

Delta´s A220 can accommodate 109 passengers in a three-class configuration. 12 seats have been installed in First Class, 15 in Delta Comfort+ and 82 in Economy Class. The brand-new interior features seat-back screens, Wi-Fi and wide seats. Moreover, extra-large windows, big overhead bins and LED ambient lighting lead to the enjoyable passenger experience.

Currently, the A220s are being built at Bombardier´s facilities in Canada. Last year, Airbus bought the CSeries from Bombardier and renamed it to the A220 family. In January, Airbus has started construction works at its final assembly line in Mobile, Alabama. In the next years, the European manufacturer hopes to deliver A220 aircraft to American customers.

Delta´s vision with the A220 is to replace 20 per cent of older, less-efficient aircraft by 2020. This fleet modernization program sees Delta benefiting from advanced technologies and composite materials, which all deliver improvements in operational efficiency.

As being one of the largest airlines in the world, Delta Air Lines´ fleet includes over 880 aircraft. The airline has its headquarters at Atlanta, Georgia and was initially founded in 1924. Delta is a member of the SkyTeam alliance and has operational hubs at cities like Atlanta, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Salt Lake City and Boston.
