The Mexican carrier Volaris and the US airline Frontier will enter into closer cooperation in the next years. Both carriers are part of the Indigo Group which has ordered 430 aircraft for their airlines during the Dubai Air Show 2017.

Subject to regulatory approval by authorities in the United States and Mexico, the codeshare routes will be available for purchase this Spring. The agreement will allow Frontier to place and sell tickets with its code (F9) on Volaris operated flights and for Volaris to place its code (Y4) on Frontier operated flights.

“This agreement will allow us to expand upon our mission to deliver low fares and enable more people to fly,” said Barry Biffle, President and Chief Executive Officer of Frontier Airlines. “Many customers traveling between the U.S. and Mexico are forced to pay high fares to fly, and this agreement will provide lower fares to a vast majority of the U.S. and Mexico population. As the leading ultra-low-cost carrier in Mexico, Volaris is an ideal partner with which to align and we look forward to working together to deliver low fares to millions of people.”

In a press release, both airlines state to have a natural fit between the carriers’ networks, each serving more than 20 of the same markets.

“We estimate that our partnership will add around 20 new destinations to our network and 80 new routes between both Mexico and the United States,” said Enrique Beltranena, Chief Executive Officer of Volaris.

Denver based Frontier Airlines operates over 320 daily flights with a fleet of 78 Airbus Family aircraft. The carrier has ordered 165 additional A320Neo and 34 Airbus A321Neo.

Volaris is the second largest carrier in Mexico. The airline operates a fleet of 69 Airbus A320 family aircraft from its hubs in several Mexican cities. Volaris is waiting for additional 80 A320Neo and 40 A321Neo.

Indigo Group owns the ultra-low-cost airlines Frontier Airlines (United States), JetSMART (Chile), Volaris (Mexico) and Wizz Air (Hungary).
