The deal is valued at $2.82 billion, according to list prices. Hawaiian Airlines also has the right, to purchase additional 10 787s. Deliveries will start from 2021 onwards.

"The Dreamliner's operational efficiency and superior guest experience make it the best aircraft for modernizing our fleet in 2021 and beyond [...] Its expanded seat capacity and extended range will allow us to expand within our current route network and offer new destinations in the Asia-Pacific region."

The Honolulu-based carrier has bought six Airbus A330-800neo aircraft in December 2014. After several talks between the airline and Boeing, Hawaiian has now decided to buy Boeing´s 787 Dreamliners instead.

Reports say, that Boeing has dumped the price, in order to cancel Airbus´ A330-800neo programme. The US-Airline was the only customer for the -800. Even parallels to the recent Bombardier trade case were made by the media.

"Hawaiian Airlines has been on an impressive growth trajectory as they strategically expanded service to and from Asia and North America. We are thrilled they have chosen the 787 Dreamliner to power the next stage of their expansion," said Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO, Kevin McAllister. "The Dreamliner's advanced technology, unmatched fuel efficiency, and passenger-pleasing cabin will optimize Hawaiian's fleet for the future and provide their customers with a best in-class experience."

Hawaiian Airlines is the flag carrier of the US-state Hawaii. The airline operates with a fleet of 53 aircraft, including 2 Airbus A321neo, 24 Airbus A330-200s, 20 Boeing 717s and 7 Boeing 767-300s. Thirty-one destinations are being served on 49 routes.
