According to „Leeham News“, Hawaiian Airlines has scrapped its intentions to order six Airbus A330-800 aircraft. The order would have been the only one for the subtype, questioning the existence of the A330-800 program.

Over the past months, Hawaiian has been in talks with Boeing and Airbus, since the airline wasn´t sure with its order. Airbus offered to cut the price on the -800s and even offered Hawaiian a reasonable price for the A350-900.

However Boeing seems to have made the race for Hawaiians´ new order. The American manufacturer wanted to kill Airbus´ -800 program, maybe due to a potential launch of a new Boeing 797 program. The Honolulu-headquartered airline now seems to favour an order for Boeing´s 787-9.

According to the report, Boeing has agreed to release three Hawaiian 767-300 aircraft. For a long time, Hawaiian wanted to retire the 767 from its fleet. United Airlines will take the 767s.

As it seems, Boeing has made a cheaper offer for the 787-9 to Hawaiian. The media says that this action shows parallels to the recent Bombardier trade case over the order for Cseries aircraft by Delta Air Lines.

Hawaiian Airlines is the flag carrier of the US-state Hawaii. The airline operates with a fleet of 53 aircraft, including 2 Airbus A321neo, 24 Airbus A330-200s, 20 Boeing 717s and 7 Boeing 767-300s. Thirty one destinations are being served on 49 routes.
