Airlines Japan Airlines and Vistara announce codeshare partnership

Japan Airlines and Vistara have entered into a codeshare partnership that will open up more routes between India and Tokyo

The agreement originates from a Memorandum of Understanding between Japan Airlines and Vistara for commercial cooperation. This agreement was signed in September 2017 and included an interline/through check-in partnership.

Now, the new codeshare agreement will come into effect for flights from February 28, 2019, and underlines both carrier´s ambitions to deepen their partnership. Vistara becomes the only codeshare partner for Japan Airlines in the country of India.

The major Japanese carrier will place its designator “JL” on approximately 32 Vistara flight each day. Trips will be mainly from Delhi to seven Indian cities, namely Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Mr Hideki Oshima, Executive Officer, Japan Airlines said: “The number of passengers travelling between Japan and India has increased over time” [...] “By strengthening the partnership with Vistara, we will be able to provide better network access for our mutual customers. And, we look to further cooperate with Vistara to open up additional opportunities for both airlines.”

Mr Sanjiv Kapoor, Vistara’s Chief Strategy & Commercial Officer, added: “This partnership helps us offer greater convenience and variety of choice to customers with a comprehensive network, as well as the opportunity of welcoming travellers from Japan and beyond to experience Vistara’s award-winning hospitality and service.”

As part of the codeshare agreement between Vistara and JAL, connections on the JAL route from Tokyo Narita and Delhi will become even more seamless and convenient for passengers, as Japan Airlines and Vistara operate its flights from the same terminal at Delhi.

JAL is the flag carrier airline of Japan and was established in 1951. The carrier has two main operational hubs at Tokyo-Haneda and Tokyo-Narita. It is a member of the Oneworld alliance and operates subsidiary airlines like J-Air, Japan Air Commuter or Japan Transocean Air. Currently, the fleet consists of 50 Boeing 737s, 35 Boeing 767s, 40 Boeing 777s and 40 Boeing 787s.

Vistara is known as Indian domestic airline, which is based in Gurgaon. The main operational base is located at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Vistara was founded in 2013 and commenced operations two years later. The current all-Airbus fleet consists of eight A320neos and 13 A320ceos. The full-service airline is a joint venture of TATA Sons Ltd. and Singapore Airlines Ltd.
