Primera Air’s CEO Hrafn Thorgeirsson has stated in an interview with Forbes, that the airline is evaluating new flights to the North American destinations Washington D.C., Baltimore and Montreal.

The airline has announced to enter into the low cost long haul market segment in mid-2017. Primera Air plans to connect new bases in Birmingham, London Stansted and Paris Charles-de-Gaulle with Newark and Boston. For its long haul operations, the airline will take delivery of 10 Airbus A321. The carrier is waiting for 8 Airbus A321Neo and will be the launch customer for the A321LR with two units ordered. All aircraft will be leased from the leasing company AerCap. The A321LR enables airlines to access new long-haul markets that were previously inaccessible with current single-aisle aircraft.

Primera Air will configure its A321 with 16 seats in business 182 seats in economy class.

The low cost long haul market was growing in 2017. Established carriers like Lufthansa and Iberia opened new routes for their long haul low cost subsidiaries Eurowings and Level. It is expected that new aircraft types like the Boeing 737 MAX and the Airbus A321Neo will boost the number of low cost long haul flights, especially between Europe and North America. Boeing’s 737MAX and the A321Neo offer the possibility to use single aisle aircraft on long haul routes with less traffic and lower operational costs.

Primera Air, a subsidiary of Primera Travel Group, operates flights from its Scandinavian hubs to popular holiday destinations. The fleet consists of 2 Boeing 737-700 and 7 Boeing 737-800.
