As part of the government program, the new Premier Minister Victoria Dancila has announced a strategic plan for Romania’s national carrier Tarom. The fleet should be increased and standardized to cut costs for maintenance. Currently, Sky Team member Tarom operates an inhomogeneous fleet of four Airbus A318, seven ATR42-500, two ATR72-500, four Boeing 737-300, four Boeing 737-700 and two B737-800.

In addition to new aircraft, the government plans to recommence long-haul operations with own widebody aircraft. Tarom has ceased flights to the USA in 2003, which were operated with Airbus A310-300. Bucharest could be connected with cities in the USA and Asia. The plan to recommence long-haul operations was already announced by the former government, but so far never implemented.

The Romanian carrier which continues to make losses has changed several managers in the last year. According to “Business-Review” Tarom recorded a record loss in 2017. Tarom has to compete with low cost carriers like Wizzair, Ryanair and Blueair which have opened bases at Bucharest Airport.
