Ryanair plans to cut the fees for checked bags. The airline will introduce a lower cost check bag option which will cost €/£8 per 10kg. Currently, Ryanair charges €/£25 per 20kg. The new policy will come into effect on November 1, 2018.

In addition, the volume of the second gate bag will be reduced. According to Ryanair, this was initially causing the flight delays. Priority customers however will still be able to bring two free carry-on bags. As per Ryanair, 60% of all customers will be unaffected.

Ryanair Chief Marketing Officer Kenny Jacobs commented: "This new policy will speed up the boarding and cut flight delays. 60% of customers will be unaffected by these changes and we expect that the other 40% will either choose to buy Priority Boarding or a 10kg check bag or will choose to travel with only one (free) small bag as 30% already do so today.”

Overall goal of the new bag policy is – according to Ryanair – to furthermore reduce flight delays that are being caused by boarding problems. The new conditions are to provide a more direct and clear guideline on how many bags are allowed on the respective flights. Moreover, less bags will allow a speed up of the boarding process.

Although Ryanair said, that just the minority of passengers will be affected by the changes, it is being speculated that customers will not profit from the changes, as they have to pay more for bags when flying with Ryanair.
