The new SAS subsidiary SAS Ireland has received its AOC by the Irish Aviation Authority. The airline commenced operations with flights between London Heathrow and Copenhagen Airport in the last days.

SAS decided to establish a new AOC in Ireland with bases in London Heathrow and Malaga in February 2017. This new carrier will receive nine Airbus A320Neo in total, of which two have already been delivered. The first flight from the base in Malaga is planned for the first half of 2018.

SAS plans to operate all flights between the UK, Spain and its Scandinavian hubs by the new subsidiary. Currently, SAS connects London Heathrow with Copenhagen, Oslo-Gardermoen, Stavanger and Stockholm-Arlanda. From Malaga SAS offers flights to Berge, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Oslo-Gardermoen, Stavanger, Stockholm-Arlanda and seasonal flights to Aarhus, Kristiansand and Malmö.

The aircraft based in London and Spain have the same customer offering and appearance as other airline operations at SAS.

SAS is competing with several European low cost carriers with a lower total cost of labor. The new subsidiary should increase its cost structure and allow the carrier to continue operating several routes with high competition.

It its latest financial report SAS stated: “Start-up costs for the new AOC and the new bases have been very low. Initially, the financial effects from operations at these bases are small, but will gradually increase as operations grow. When the bases are fully operational, we expect them to have the same underlying unit cost as our low cost competitors.”
