Airlines Southwest Airlines has retired Boeing 737 Classic and launched the 737 MAX 8

After more than 32 years on September 29, 2017, Southwestern Airlines send their Boeing 737 Classic on its very last flight from Housten to Dallas’ Love Field. Only two days later, on October 1, 2017, the low-cost carrier launched the new Boeing 737 MAX 8 and became the first airline in North America which offers scheduled flight with this type of aircraft. The low cost carrier will renew its current fleet and complement its existing fleet with Boeing 737 MAX in the next years.

Southwest started operations with nine Boeing 737 MAX 8 on October 1, 2017, but expects five more until the end of 2017. Based on a delivery schedule, the low-cost carrier has ordered a total of 200 aircraft. The carrier is still waiting for 30 Boeing 737 MAX7 and 161 more of the MAX8. The new Boeing 737 MAX 8 comes with a single-class cabin with 175 seats and offers a seat pitch of 32 inches.

The airline operates already 689 planes. Currently the fleet consists of 508 Boeing 737-700, 172 Boeing 737-800 and the 9 Boeing 737 MAX 8. With its current fleet, southwest has already the biggest Boeing fleet in the world.

Southwest Airlines started operations with the Boeing 737-200 in 1971. The carrier was launch customer of the newer Boeing 737-300 in 1984 and operated the Boeing 737-500 from 1990 until 2016.

Southwestern Airlines is the largest low-cost carrier in the world. It was founded in 1967 by Herb Kelleher as Air Southwest in Dallas were it still has its headquarter. The airline has more than 55,000 employees and carries over 115 million Customers annually with up to 4000 flights per day. In 2016, the carrier boarded approximately 152 million customers per year, which is an average if 12,5 million passengers per month. The airline operates on 14 hubs at Baltimore, Chicago-Midway, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Houston, Las Vegas, St. Louis, Los Angeles, Nashville, Oakland, Orlando, Phoenix and San Diego in the United States.
