The new airline with the name Thomas Cook Airlines Balearics will commence operations with at least three Airbus A320 aircraft which previously operated for Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium. These aircraft will initially take over short and medium-haul flights for Thomas Cook's German airline Condor to replace third party aircraft leases.

Christoph Debus, Chief Airline Officer Thomas Cook Group, said: "The new airline and base will provide us with the right platform to better manage the seasonal demand in our business, giving us more control at lower cost as we continue to expand the choice of destinations we offer our customers. With more than one million Thomas Cook customers flying into Palma every year, we have a strong existing infrastructure on which to build."

Thomas Cook Group operates three airlines in Germany (Condor), UK (Thomas Cook Airlines) and Scandinavia (Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia). The Belgium subsidiary Thomas Cook Airlines Belgium was sold to Brussels Airlines in 2017.

Several airlines have increased its operations at Palma de Mallorca Airport in the last months. After the end of Air Berlin’s hub, Lufthansa’s low cost subsidiary Eurowings has taken over several routes. Additionally, the Air Berlin subsidiary Niki connects Palma de Mallorca with several destinations in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The number of passengers has increased in the last years. In 2016 over 26 million passengers were handled at Mallorca Airport. According to the data provided by the airport operator AENA, this is an increase of over 10% compared to 2015.
