Amid the current travel restrictions in Europe due to the COVID-19 pandemic, low-cost airline Volotea has celebrated the opening of a new operational base at Naples in Italy. In total, two Airbus A319s will be based at the airport.

The opening represents the airline´s sixth Italian base. In October 2019, Volotea initially announced that it will enhance its operations at Naples with a base. Now, Volotea can focus on operating mainly domestic flights in the summer season, along with routes to Greece.

From Naples, passengers will be able to fly to 17 destinations in general, with nine of them being domestic routes withing Italy. Volotea sees a strong potential in the region´s tourism and now intends to grow the number of passengers travelling to Naples.

Next to boosting the region´s tourism – especially after COVID-19 – the airline is also creating nearly 50 direct job opportunities.

Volotea will now fly from Naples to Catania 11 times a week, to Genoa five times a week, to Turin, Trieste and Verona 2 times a week and to Olbia seven times a week. Furthermore, the domestic network for this summer sees flights to Alghero two times a week, six flights a week to Cagliari and two to Palermo. Next to the domestic routes, Volotea will fly to Mykonos in Greece five times a week, to Santorini four times a week, to Heraklion, Zante and Skiathos three times a week, to Rodi twice a week and to Cephalonia and Preveza-Lefkada once a week.

Carlos Muñoz, President and Founder of Volotea said: “At this particularly challenging times, the opening of our sixth Italian base has taken on a great symbolic significance: it confirms our commitment to supporting the Campanian economy at the time of reopening of the Italian tourism industry. As well as consolidating our routes to some of Italy's biggest destinations, the official launch of flights from the new Naples base will mean the creation of new direct and indirect jobs locally. It’s worth mentioning that with new hygiene measures and safety protocols, we are readier than ever to guarantee a great experience and to protect the health of our passengers and crews. On behalf of everyone at Volotea, I would like to thank the local authorities and the GESAC management for their support in making Naples our new home today.”

Volotea Airlines was founded in 2011 and is a Spanish low-cost airline. The fleet consists of 14 Boeing 717s and 20 Airbus A319s, which can seat up to 156 passengers. Volotea has several operational bases throughout Europe and is one of the fastest growing low-cost carriers in Europe.
