Airlines WestJet announces Calgary as home to initial B787 hub
Canadian carrier WestJet has announced to base its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner at Calgary Airport.
WestJet’s first three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner will operate international flights from Calgary. First destinations will be London Gatwick (April 28, 2019), Paris Charles de Gaulle (May 17, 2019) and Dublin (June 1, 2019). The Dreamliner route from Calgary to London (Gatwick) will replace the Boeing 767 service that currently operates the route from Calgary.
"Alberta's connectivity to the rest of the world is vital for our economy," said Ed Sims, WestJet President and CEO. "WestJet is investing in Alberta to bring further economic growth, boost tourism to the province, and to further position our city as an international aviation hub. We are excited to bring Albertans to the world and the world to Alberta."
The first of 10 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners ordered by WestJet will arrive in Calgary early in 2019, with two more arriving by April. The aircraft will operate on domestic flights for crew training and regulatory compliance before the first scheduled international flight in April. WestJet also has options for an additional 10 aircraft to arrive between 2020 and 2024.
The ordered Dreamliner will have 16 business class seats, featuring 16 private pods with lie-flat seats, 28 economy plus and 260 economy class seats.
WestJet will become the first Canadian carrier operating long-haul flights with Boeing 787 Dreamliners from Calgary. By June 2019, WestJet will offer connections to 65 non-stop destinations from Calgary.
The carrier operates a fleet of 123 aircraft on domestic and international routes from several Canadian hubs. The fleet consists of 119 Boeing 737 including older 600 and new B737 MAX 8. For its long-haul network, the airline operates four B767-300ER.
In addition to the announcement of the new Calgary operations, WestJet has unveiled a refreshed branding including the new slogan “Love where you’re going.”
