Airlines Wizz Air announces Vienna base expansion

Following the initial announcement to establish an operational base at Vienna Airport in January this year, Wizz Air has now advertised, that it will further expand these operations.

The low-cost carrier will base 2 further Airbus A321 aircraft at Vienna until March 2019. The A321´s will be arranged in an all-economy configuration and can accommodate 230 passengers. By adding two more A321, Wizz Air´s annual capacity rises to over 2 million seats. The airline will offer nine new routes, including flights to Madrid, Milan and Lisbon. Wizz Air´s base establishment relates to an investment of $570 million and creates 200 new jobs. Also, Vienna´s tourism industry, its local economy and the transportation systems will be strengthened.

George Michalopoulos, Chief Commercial Officer at Wizz Air, said: “[…] Offering nearly half million seats on sale in 2018 and over 2 million in 2019 we are creating new opportunities for Austrian customers to visit some of the most beautiful cities and regions in Europe. We are sure that our excellent value service will make Wizz Air the airline of choice for Austrian travellers as well drive inbound tourism.”

In January 2018, the carrier announced that it will open a new base in Vienna. Start of operations at Austria’s biggest airport is planned for June 2018. By the end of the year, Wizz Air plans to operate 69 weekly flights with three Airbus A321 aircraft.

According to the airline, Wizz Air is expected to become the third largest carrier in Vienna, after Austrian Airlines and Eurowings Europe.

Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport, said: “The fact that Wizz Air is already expanding its operations at Vienna Airport and will increase the number of aircraft stationed at its Vienna base by two to a total of five underlines the competitiveness of Vienna Airport as a competitive aviation hub and high-performance gateway. Thanks to the expanded base as well as the additional flight connections, Wizz Air is provided added growth impetus to Vienna Airport and passengers will be offered an even broader range of travel options when flying out of Vienna.”

Until March 2019, Wizz Air will offer a network of 27 routes from Vienna to European destinations.
