Canadian freight airline Cargojet Inc. has announced a comprehensive plan for a future fleet and route expansion. The reasoning behind the expansion are the domestic and international growth opportunities, which the airline hopes to meet.

Over the past years, the airline has constantly driven its growth strategy with additional capacities, newer aircraft and better connectivity. Especially in times like these, the carrier sees its opportunity to grow its business.

Dr. Ajay Virmani, President and CEO commented: “Fast changing global supply chains and e-commerce trends present a unique opportunity for Cargojet to substantially grow its international business from an opportunistic add-on to a long-term, sustainable growth driver [...] Having successfully grown our domestic network with a solid market-share and diversifying into ACMI and Charter Services, building a new growth pillar through international business is a natural next step for us”.

The new expansion plan sees five new Boeing 767 freighters joining the fleet. Beginning in the third quarter this year, all five aircraft will have joined Cargojet until the end of 2022. Two of these new aircraft, the airline stated, will be used to expand on domestic operations, while the three other aircraft will be flying routes throughout the world.

Then in 2023, Cargojet announced, two Boeing 777 Freighters will be joining the fleet. The Canadian airline also holds purchase rights to add two more aircraft. These aircraft open up entirely new markets and will be used for long-haul routes to Asia and other South Asian markets. Also, they will be used to serve European, South-Central and North American cities more efficiently.

Lastly, the airline is planning a comprehensive and heavy maintenance for their aircraft until the end of the third quarter this year. If the fleet is ready, Cargojet will then go on and begin international services to selected destinations.

"With this expanded fleet, Cargojet will be better positioned to meet the growth expectations of its customers and build on its strong domestic network covering 15 major cities everyday while selectively adding International destinations that will strategically position Cargojet to service fast growing domestic and cross-border e-Commerce and urgent-cargo opportunities. In addition, Cargojet will continue to explore and focus on additional growth opportunities in the vast US market," the airline concluded.
