Freight Qatar Cargo announces South America expansion for 2020

Qatar Airways Cargo has announced, that 2020 will see a massive freight network expansion in South America. Four new destinations will be added.

The major expansion in South America underlines the strong presence of the carrier. Starting in January 2020, the airline from Doha will start scheduled services to Campinas (Brazil), Santiago (Chile), Lima (Peru) and Bogotá (Colombia).

Qatar will fly to Bogotá two times a week and the route starts at Doha and leads via Luxembourg and Miami. The service from Bogotá to Doha will be operated via Liege. On each leg, 200 tonnes are available for transport. The twice-weekly services to Campinas from Doha will be flows via Luxembourg, while the return flights will be operating via Santiago, Lima, Dallas and Luxembourg.

All services are being performed with Boeing 777 Freighter aircraft, of which the carrier has received its 21st aircraft in November 2019. Now, the freighter fleet of Qatar Cargo measures 28 aircraft. On Paris Air Show this year, Qatar also announced the order for five additional Boeing 777 Freighters, which are set to be delivered from April 2020 onwards.

Regarding the South America expansion, Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, said: “Air cargo is a crucial element in the global transport system that supports international trade and the free flow of goods around the world. The addition of these four new routes in South America further reinforces our position as one of the world’s leading air cargo providers, operating one of the largest networks in the world with the youngest and most environmentally efficient fleet in the industry.”

On the new routes, Qatar will mainly transport goods such as pharmaceuticals, perishables and general cargo. Also, some movements of live animals and high-value items like electronics or telecommunication equipment will be performed.

About its cargo hub at Doha, Qatar released in a statement: "Qatar Airways Cargo has made substantial investment in its operations at Doha hub and globally to ensure all cargo deliveries are processed efficiently and seamlessly. Special facilities and well-trained personnel ensure expert handling over a wide variety of product categories, such as express, livestock, valuables, perishables, oversized cargo and general cargo that require air freight carriage."

Qatar Airways Cargo is a subsidiary airline of flag-carrier Qatar Airways. The current fleet consists of five Airbus A330-200 Freighters, two Boeing 747-8 Freighters and 21 777-200 Freighters. Qatar Cargo was founded in 1993.
