Helicopters Bell and Safran announce partnership for future innovations

A new collaboration between Bell and Safran has been established. The companies seek to share their vision for future air taxi and VTOL systems.

An announcement was made by Bell Helicopter at the Future of Transportation World Conference in Cologne, Germany.

Safran has been working on exploring potential hybrid solutions for propulsion systems for several years. The shared vision is to aim for a deployment of Bell Air Taxis on future mobility systems.

Scott Drennan, Bell’s director of Innovation said: “Bell is at the forefront of on-demand mobility – ushering a new era of flight where the benefits of aviation are accessible to more people in more places [...] This announcement is another proof point of our commitment to providing transportation of people and logistics in new, innovative and more efficient ways; our work with Safran is a historical milestone for future transport solutions.”

Stéphane Cueille, Safran senior executive vice president for R&T and Innovation added: “Thanks to the long and sustained technology-development strategy conducted within the Safran group, we can now offer Bell our hybrid electric power solutions for their next generation products that result in improved performance giving more value to our customers.”

Recently, the Canadian Government announced that it will invest in the aerospace sector. Bell Helicopter is one of the profiting companies from the Government´s programme. With the investments, Bell aims to further develop innovations in the VTOL and the air taxi area.

Safran is a high-technology group located in the aviation market. It employs more than 58,000 people worldwide and is known for its aircraft engines like the popular CFM56. Furthermore, the company develops the new LEAP engine, which will be deployed on the Airbus A320neo Family, the Boeing 737 MAX series and on the Comac C919. In February 2018, Safran took control of Zodiac Aerospace.

Bell is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Textron Inc. and operates strategic locations around the globe. The company is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. Bell Helicopters has recently delivered a first three Bell 505 for the Chinese market.
