The Airbus A321LR took off from Paris Le Bourget Airport and landed at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. The long-haul flight is the next step after the maiden flight on 31 January of this year. The transcontinental flight, with the aircraft powered by two CFM International LEAP-1A engines, is part of nearly 100 hours of flight tests in advance of the jetliner’s airworthiness certification, expected in the second quarter of 2018.

The Airbus A321LR is a single-aisle aircraft and can be configured with a two-class cabin with full flat seats or in a single-class layout for up to 240 passengers. Due to additional tanks, the aircraft will be able to fly up to 7.400 kilometers nonstop.

Airbus has received over 100 orders for the long-range version of the A321Neo and plans to deliver a first aircraft to Primera Air in late 2018. Several airlines have ordered the “Middle of the Market” aircraft, which fits the gap between the A320 and B737 family and the smallest long-haul aircraft like the Boeing 787 or the Airbus A330. Aer Lingus, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Primera Air are all planning to offer transatlantic flights between Europe and the US east coast.
