Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has officially delivered the first A321 aircraft from Mobile, that is partially being powered with biofuel. Carrier JetBlue is the first airline in the United States to receive the more sustainable jet.

According to Airbus, the aircraft is equipped with 15 percent sustainable jet fuel in its tanks. JetBlue is to take delivery of five A321s with sustainable jet fuel this year. The fuel is being provided and certified by Air BP.

Frederic Eychenne, Head of New Energies at Airbus said: “Our goal is to source sustainable fuels in the southeastern United States. It is an opportunity to work closely with local stakeholders to scale-up production and the commercialization of sustainable aviation fuels in the region [...] We are actively seeking ideas to leverage Airbus’ strategy into opportunities for new economic development in Alabama.”

Robin Hayes, Chief Executive Officer, JetBlue added: “Renewable jet fuel affirms JetBlue’s belief that we can help define our industry’s future path. Our goal is to serve as a market-maker for renewable jet fuel, creating demand and therefore supporting supply. We’re working closely with Airbus to set up infrastructure for more options in the southeast region.”

Airbus has been offering the option for customers to take over aircraft with a bled of sustainable jet fuel since May 2016. The manufacturer will now determine the next steps, so that more customers can take advantage of the option.

In the long run, Airbus hopes to further support the industrial production of sustainable aviation fuels in the U.S.
