Industry Airbus delivers first U.S.-built A220 from Mobile
Aircraft manufacturer Airbus has delivered its first A220 that has been manufactured in Mobile, Alabama.
Delta Air Lines has become the first airline to receive a new A220-300 aircraft built by Airbus at its new production line at Mobile Alabama. After the acquisition of the A220 program from Bombardier, Airbus started to implement a new production line for the regional aircraft at the American facility.
Jeffrey Knittel, Chairman & CEO Airbus Americas, Inc. said: “The delivery of the first U.S.-built A220-300 is a historic moment that highlights Airbus’ growing industrial footprint in North America and makes us all extremely proud [...] We look forward to seeing passengers delighted by the experience of travelling on board this brand new A220-300 proudly built in Mobile, Alabama.”
Philippe Balducchi, leader A220 programme, added: “Handing over the first U.S-assembled aircraft to a U.S.-based customer is a real point of pride for the A220 programme [...] This delivery is the first of many to come and shows the strong collaborative spirit between the A220 Programme teams globally.”
In January last year, Airbus announced the groundbreaking of the new Final Assembly Line and in August 2019, Airbus officially started production. In June this year, the manufacturer celebrated the first flight of the Aircraft and now the delivery is yet another milestone.
Airbus stated that approximately 400 employees are working and have been trained on A220 production, some of them are still in Mirabel, where the main final assembly line is located. To ensure the best efficiency, Airbus has implemented a dedicated U.S.-based production team.
The delivery of the first U.S.-built A220 is also another step for Delta Air Lines. The carrier is continuing to modernize its fleet and is currently the largest A220 aircraft operator in the world. Currently, the airline flies with 34 A220-100s and two A220-300s. However, some of the aircraft are stored due to the travel restrictions during the pandemic.
As of now, Delta Air Lines has a total of 95 A220 aircraft on order and has now become the first operator in the Americas to be flying both the A220-100 and the larger A220-300 types.
Delta is one of the largest airlines in the world and is normally using a fleet of over 800 aircraft. The carrier operates with Airbus A220s, A319s, A320s, A321s, A330s and A350s, as well as with Boeing 717s, 737s, 757s, 767s and 777s.
