Industry Airbus facility Tianjin celebrates 10 year anniversary
Airbus is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the Final Assembly Line in Tianjin, China.
In 2008, Airbus stepped outside its comfort zone and opened a third Final Assembly Line (FAL) in Tianjin China, after having established FALs in Toulouse and Hamburg. The FAL was created over the course of a joint venture with the China Aviation Industry Corporation and the Tianjin Free Trade Zone.
Since the first Airbus A320 Family aircraft was delivered from Tianjin in 2009, the manufacturer has built over 380 jetliners from the bestselling A320 Family. The facility initially was established with the goal to meet the demand of the Chinese air transportation market and to expand Airbus´ global footprint and industrial network.
Now, Airbus has furthermore stated that it will increase the production. The FAL is ready to deliver six single-aisle airliners a month by the end of 2019. This increase shows the trust in the structures Airbus has established over the last 10 years. Only with on-time and on-quality manufacturing a production site of that size can be economically profitable.
George Xu, the CEO of Airbus China said: “The Tianjin Final Assembly Line was a strategic decision that took courage and innovation to implement [...] With the momentum of China's aviation market, it has become a model for Sino-European cooperation – opening new opportunities for our business development in China, as well as creating a solid foundation for the internationalisation of Tianjin and China's aviation industry.”
In September 2017, the Tianjin FAL has also started to deliver Airbus A330 wide-body jetliners. With the expansion into the long-range jetliner segment came a new Delivery Centre for the A330s. The combination with the existing A320 Family FAL was the first of its kind for the manufacturer outside Europe.
The Tianjin A320 Family FAL now has more than 730 employees and significantly contributes to the regional economy. Carriers that already received A320 Family and A330 aircraft from Tianjin are Air Asia, Air China, Beijing Capital Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Loongair, Shenzhen Airlines and Sichuan Airlines.
Next to the Final Assembly Lines in Toulouse, Hamburg and Tianjin, Airbus has an assembly facility in Mobile, United States. Recently, Airbus has delivered its first aircraft from Mobile with sustainable jet fuel.
