In a press release, the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer states that the E190-E2 proved to offer a 1,3% better performance in regards to the fuel consumption which should represent a 17,3% improvement when compared to the current generation E190, and nearly 10% better than its direct competitor. This direct competitor could be Bombardier’s CSeries which commenced operations for Swiss Global Air Lines in 2016. Embraer and Bombardier are competing in the regional narrow-body jet segment with aircraft offering around 130 seats in a high-density configuration. Embraer’s E195-E2 which offers up to 146 seats in a single class configuration is competing with Bombardier’s CS300 as well as Boeing’s new generation B737 MAX7 and the Airbus A319Neo. The smaller E190-E2 with a maximum of 114 seats is a bit smaller than its Canadian competitor, the Bombardier CS100, which offers 133 seats.

In addition to the higher fuel efficiency, Embraer announced better take off performance, longer maintenance intervals and lower noise and emissions level.

Rodrigo Silva e Souza, Marketing VP, Embraer Commercial Aviation, said, “this means that when our first operator, Widerøe, operates its inaugural E190-E2 flight on April 24th from Bergen to Tromsø, it will be the first in-service flight of the world’s most efficient and eco-friendly narrow-body jet. This is an immense achievement for our team and means additional value delivered to our customers.”

The Embraer E-Jet E2 family program was launched at the Paris Air Show 2013 and the first built aircraft took its first flight in May 2016. Embraer has confirmed orders for 228 aircraft including 100 E175-E2, 63 E190—E2 and 65 E195-E2. Launch customer Wideroe should receive the first E190-E2 in the next months. Largest customer is the North American regional airline SkyWest Airlines, which has ordered 100 E175-E2 and expects first deliveries in 2021.

Bombardier has received 372 orders for its CSeries program, including 123 CS100 orders and 249 CS300 orders. In October 2017, Bombardier and Airbus announced a strategical partnership on the CSeries program, in which Airbus acquired 50,01% in the aircraft program.
