Embraer is continuing on its path to be a leader in defining the aviation industry of tomorrow. The manufacturer has now presented an aircraft family with four new sustainable aircraft. The Energia family seeks to achieve the industry´s net zero Carbon emission goal by 2050.

Arjan Meijer, President and CEO of Embraer Commercial Aviation, commented on the company´s strategy regarding sustainability: “We will see a big transformation in our industry towards a more sustainable aviation. With 50 years’ experience in developing, certifying, and supporting regional aircraft, Embraer is in a unique position to make viable the introduction of new disruptive green technologies.”

In the development process, Embraer has teamed up with an international consortium of engineering universities. Furthermore, SMEs and aeronautical research institutes have been involved to gain a better understanding in topics like energy harvesting, storage, and thermal management.

The four aircraft are called Energia Hybrid (E9-HE), Energia Electric (E9-FE), Energia H2 Fuel Cell (E19-H2FC) and Energia H2 Gas Turbine (E50-H2GT). The aircraft family incorporates different propulsion technologies: Electric, hydrogen fuel cell, hybrid electric and dual fuel gas turbine.

The Energia Hybrid is capable of accommodating nine passengers and will reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% due to the hybrid-electric propulsion system. According to the technology readiness, Embraer states that 2030 could be seeing the aircraft being introduced to further developments. The engines in the Energia are rear-mounted.

Embraer´s Energia Electric operates with zero Co2 emissions through aft contra-rotating propeller. Technology readiness is expected by the manufacturer for 2035. Nine passengers can be accommodated and the vehicle is powered by fully electrical propulsion systems.

Energia H2 Fuel Cell is being powered by hydrogen electric propulsion systems that lead to zero CO2 emissions in operations. The aircraft can welcome 19 passengers on board and the technology readiness is expected to be around 2025.

Lastly, the Energia H2 Gas Turbine is the largest aircraft of the newly presented portfolio. Between 35 and 50 seats will be installed and the aircraft is being powered by hydrogen or SAF/JetA turbine propulsion, that leads to up to 100% of CO2-emission reduction. Embraer states, that the technology readiness will be at around 2040.
