The new maintenance technologies, developed by both Start-Ups and established technology companies, will undergo practical tests at Lufthansa Technik´s Malta facility.

Innovations, such as drone-based inspections of aircraft skin or exoskeletons and mobile 3D-scanners will be put to test by the company. Lufthansa Technik is seeking to increase focus on new and state-of-the-art innovations in the near future.

New technologies will open up possibilities for further enhancement of the aircraft overhaul and maintenance process.

Marcus Motschenbacher, CEO of Lufthansa Technik Malta, said: "Our aim is to improve base maintenance processes and then use the improved processes across all our locations. This enables us to guarantee the same quality and standards at the highest technological level throughout the Lufthansa Technik Group's network."

Lufthansa Technik stated, that if a technology proves itself, it is likely to be integrated in the practical work process. Then, the innovation will be provided to all other Lufthansa Technik base maintenance locations in the world.

Currently, 3D scanners are being tested to capture detailed measurements of damage in the structure of an aircraft. Additionally, drone-based inspections are being accomplished. Exoskeletons relieve employees of physically strenuous work during the production phase. Lufthansa Technik said, that further innovations are to follow soon.

Lufthansa Technik said: “Malta is just the start: Innovation bays are currently being planned at other Lufthansa Technik locations. This is an important contribution to shortening aircraft layovers for airline customers.”
