Start-Ups Bamboo Airways commits to buy 20 787-9s

Bamboo Airways has announced a commitment to buy 20 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. This new order for long-haul aircraft follows an agreement with Airbus to acquire 24 Airbus A321Neo.

Bamboo Airways has announced, that it will buy 20 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft to start international flights. The deal is valued at $5.6B at current list prices. The aircraft are set to be delivered between April 2020 through 2021.

Bamboo Airways is a Start-Up airline from Vietnam, that plans to begin commercial operations in 2019 out of Hanoi. The carrier aims to serves markets within Asia, North America and Europe. For its long-haul services, the carrier seeks to profit from the efficient 787 Dreamliners.

Mr Trinh Van Quyet, Chairman of FLC Group, 100% owner of Bamboo Airways, confirmed: "We are excited to introduce these new 787 Dreamliners into our fleet as we prepare to launch long-haul operations to international markets [...] Our long-term vision is to connect Vietnam to key markets within Asia, Europe and North America and the capabilities of these new state-of-the-art Dreamliners will help us achieve our goals. […]”

Once the first aircraft service, Bamboo Airways will be the third major Vietnamese carrier beside flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and the low cost carrier Vietjet. Due to its high demand for domestic flights and a growing number of tourists, Vietnam is one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. By operating flights with the Boeing 787, Bamboo Airways could become the second Vietnamese carrier, beside Vietnam Airlines, offering long-haul services.

In March, Airbus has announced, that FLC group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding for 24 Airbus A321Neo aircraft for Bamboo Airways. The agreement was signed in Paris by Trinh Van Quyet, Chairman of FLC Group and Eric Schulz, Chief Commercial Officer, Airbus.

Trinh Van Quyet said in March: "After evaluating carefully the competing products, FLC Group and Bamboo Airways have selected the A321Neo as the most efficient option for our new operation [...] The A321neo will enable us to combine comfort, efficiency and the right capacity for our planned services, which will primarily serve fast growing leisure markets in Vietnam.”

Bamboo Airways has recently announced, that it will recruit over 600 positions. With these structures, the carrier aims to be established in the Vietnamese low-cost marked soon. By 2023, the Start-Up plans to have opened 24 domestic and 16 international routes.
