In the first summer after the insolvency of Germany’s second largest carrier Air Berlin, the demand for additional aircraft capacity is very high.

Sundair, a start-up carrier, which commenced operations in July 2017, has now announced it has acquired two additional Airbus A320 aircraft. The two A320 are former Air Berlin aircraft and flew with the registration D-ABHI and D-ABDB. Both aircraft are currently undergoing maintenance in Budapest. The former D-ABHI should enter into service for Sundair with the new registration D-ASGK in August. According to a press release, the jet will be based in the Berlin Schönfeld Airport. Due to the high demand for additional seat capacity, the aircraft will operate in the former Air Berlin livery and receive the Sundair livery later.

The entry into service for the second aircraft with the registration D-ASMR is scheduled for September 2018 with no decision regarding a base made jet.

The Stralsund based SundAir was founded in Spring 2016. In September 2016 the German tour operator Schauinsland acquired 50% of the start-up carrier. A first planned commencement of operations in April 2017 was postponed after a delay in a delivery of the first A320 aircraft. The first aircraft with the German registration D-ASEF is leased from the Brazil LATAM Airlines Group. After receiving a German AOC, SundAir commenced operations on September 27, 2017. A second leased aircraft with the registration D-ASEE arrived in November 2017. The carrier operates flights from its bases in Berlin Tegel, Kassel-Calden and Munich.
