The AOC was issued earlier this month by the Sint Maarten Department of Civil Aviation. SXM Airways is headquartered in Sint Maarten and plans to operate ad-hoc passenger and cargo flights from early January 2018.

Managing Director Elvis Queeley told The Daily Herald: “I would like to thank Head of the Civil Aviation Department Lou Halley and its team for their cooperation during this process of establishing an airline. Minister of Aviation Melisa Arrindell-Doncher has also been instrumental in the process and we thank the Minister for her assistance and understanding throughout the process,”

Following the certificate, SXM Airways secured landing rights for the island of St. Eustatius. Queeley added: “Right now, the focus is to get the landing rights from our surrounding islands. We have been training in the meantime and have a capable flight crew that is ready to serve clients. We will be launching our service at the beginning of January and the public will be informed about our routes. We intend to offer competitive rates for our customers,”

The airline will start with using a single Britten Norman Islander, but plans to expand the fleet by 3 aircraft in 2020. The Britten Norman Islander, PJ-SXM, seats 9 passengers and has the range to serve the whole chain of Caribbean Islands.
