During the test flight, the Unmanned Aviation Vehicle (UAV) was only using the 4G cellular network for control and command. Moreover, flight data telemetry was recorded that will be analysed for the technology development.

Numerous landings and take-offs were accomplished during the test flight. An autonomous flight plan was executed as well, using NOVAerial´s multicopter UAV platform. With only utilizing the 4G cellular network, a more stable and safe control can be reached. Additionally, a more robust command and datalink telemetry can be provided to the operational personnel on the ground, including the pilot.

Michael Burns, CEO and Director of Global UAV Technologies Ltd. commented: "We are excited to reveal one of the many R&D projects presently ongoing at NOVAerial. The ability to fly drones on the back of the existing cellular network is a large step forward for both consumer and commercial drone applications world-wide.”

The ability to control link and data transfers in real-time with existing cellular networks will enhance the effectiveness of an UAV. Pilots can launch, fly and land an UAV everywhere in the world where cellular network coverage is. In urban circumstances, the radio communication will not be used.

“Currently, UAV's fly utilising a direct radio link with the pilot ground station. Using the cellular network as a high bandwidth datalink will provide increased operational range for many applications such as drone surveillance, delivery, search and rescue and emergency response flights in both urban and rural areas. This technology opens the door to a range of new drone applications that have not been possible until now," Burns added.

The companies Global UAV and NOVAerial will further work on developing the technology. The end goal is, according the Global UAV, to commercialize cellular network control as integration option for current UAV´s from NOVAerial.

Global UAV Technologies Ltd. Is a vertically integrated company, specialized on drone technology. It owns five wholly owned subsidiaries which provide a spectrum of UAV services and products. This includes drone manufacturing, research development and flight services. Global UAV is headquartered at Vancouver, Canada.
