Boeing HorizonX Ventures has announced its investment in the California-based start-up Matternet on Tuesday of this week. The company specializes in on-demand unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) delivery operations in urban environments and was the first worldwide to receive approval for UAV operations over densely populated areas in Switzerland in March 2017.

With an advanced logistics platform Matternet provides UAV delivery operations for healthcare, e-commerce and logistics organizations. Together with Swiss Post, Matternet has set up an on-demand delivery service for medical samples to Swiss hospitals in 2017.

"Matternet's technology and proven track record make the development of a safe, global autonomous air mobility system a near-term reality," said Brian Schettler, managing director of Boeing HorizonX Ventures. "Our investment will allow Matternet to scale its operations while strengthening Boeing's position as a leader in next-generation transportation solutions."

Matternet founder and chief executive officer Andreas Raptopoulos is excited to partner with Boeing HorizonX Ventures. "As we expand Matternet's U.S. and global operations, we will work with Boeing to make next-generation aerial logistics networks a reality and transform our everyday lives," he says.

Under the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) drone integration program Matternet was chosen to carry out drone logistics operations for U.S. hospitals in May 2018.

With the participation of Swiss Post, Sony Innovations Fund and Levitate Capital, Boeing Horizon X Ventures led the $16 million, Series A investment in Matternet. Boeing HorizonX Ventures’ investment portfolio covers companies specializing in technologies for aerospace and manufacturing innovations. Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems.
