Major U.S.-American carrier United Airlines has underlined its partnership with European aircraft manufacturer Airbus by signing a firm purchase agreement for 60 new A321neo aircraft. It is the airline’s latest step in its “United Next” initiative, with which United Airlines seeks to integrate more modern and efficient aircraft into its fleet.

United had previously ordered 50 A321XLR and 70 A321neo aircraft. With this new order, the airline’s total purchase commitment from Airbus rises to 180 A321 aircraft. United is enroute to become one of the largest operators of the aircraft type in the world. Shortly, the carrier will take delivery of its first A321neo from Airbus’s Final Assembly Line in Hamburg-Finkenwerder.

Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International, commented: “Upon introduction of the A321neo into its fleet in the coming weeks, United will take full benefit of Airbus’ Airspace cabin, providing an exceptional customer and cabin crew experience completely in phase with the United Next initiative […] With regard to operations, the A321neo’s fuel efficiency, lower carbon footprint and lower maintenance and operating costs will be a game changer for our partners at United.”

Regarding the Airspace cabin, Airbus wrote: “United’s A321neo aircraft will feature the unrivaled Airbus’ Airspace cabin, which includes a unique welcome area and the latest full LED lighting technologies (which helps to reduce jet lag); new slimmer sidewall panels for extra personal space at shoulder level; improved window views with redesigned bezels and completely integrated window shades; new large overhead bins; and additional elements to enhance the passenger experience.“

The A321neo is the largest member of the A320neo Family, which consists of the A321neo, A320neo and A319neo, even though the latter is the least popular variant with only around 60 orders. The aircraft family incorporates new generation engines and Sharklets, leading to a 50% noise reduction and more than 20% ruel savings and CO2 reduction for the A321neo, when compared to previous generation aircraft. More than 5,400 A321neos have been ordered by customers around the globe.
