Airlines Alaska Airlines intends to join oneworld alliance

Alaska Airlines has confirmed its intentions to join the oneworld alliance. Also, the airline seeks to expand its relationship with American Airlines.

Alaska Airlines has confirmed, that it intends to join the oneworld alliance and to expand its strategic partnership with major U.S.-carrier American Airlines in the same step. American is already a leading member of oneworld and Alaska Airlines sees many benefits in joining the alliance.

According to the airline, passengers will be able to earn and use miles on both Alaska and American flights with full elite status reciprocity. Moreover, Alaska Airlines customers have access to nearly 50 American Admirals Club lounges worldwide, while American customers can use the seven Alaska Lounges in the U.S.

The agreement also sees a domestic codeshare agreement and expanded international travel from Los Angeles and Seattle with a seamless booking and travelling experience.

For Summer 2021, Alaska Airlines seeks to be a oneworld member. It will allow the airline to offer flights with seamless access to 1,200 destinations around the world.

Andrew Harrison, Alaska’s executive vice president and Chief Commercial Officer commented: “This alliance opens the world for Alaska Airlines guests, whether traveling for business or pleasure [...] And importantly for our employees and the communities we serve, this West Coast international alliance enables Alaska’s continued independent growth.”

The joining of Alaska Airlines is subsect to the alliance´s approval.

Oneworld alliance is one of the largest airline alliances in the world. It brings together 13 airlines from around the world. In April, Royal Air Maroc will join the group as first African full member. Furthermore, oneworld has recently announced plans for the first oneworld branded lounge at Moscow Domodedovo Airport.

The alliance´s airline serve 1,100 airports in 180 territories with 14,000 daily departures. On a combined fleet of 3,500 aircraft, the airlines transport almost 550 million passengers a year.

Alaska Airlines is a major American airline headquartered in Washington. It was founded 88 years ago in 1932 and commenced operations as Alaska Airlines in 1944. The current fleet consists of 330 aircraft, including 10 Airbus A319s, 50 A320s, 10 A321s, 166 Boeing 737s, 32 De Havilland Canada HDC-8 Dash 8s and 62 Embraer ERJ-175s.
