Airlines Spicejet plans to bring seaplanes to India

Indian low cost carrier Spicejet has announced to explore the possibility of manufacturing seaplanes in West-Bengal.

The Indian newspaper “The Times of India” reports, Spicejet’s chairman Ajay Singh stated at the Bengal Global Business Summit 2018, the carrier sees a potential in establishing a hub for seaplanes in West-Bengal which could fly to Gangasagar, Sunderbans and other parts of the state.

"We would like to fly these sea-planes in the state to boost tourism as well to explore the possibility of manufacturing them in the state," Singh said.

Together with Setouchi Holdings, Spicejet ist testing Quest Kodiak seaplanes since December 2017.  Setouchi Holding has bought Quest Aircraft Company in 2015, which builds the light transport seaplane Quest Kodiak. The aircraft has a capacity for 9 passengers and a maximum take-off weight of 3290kg.

The Indian State West-Bengal is located in Eastern India on the Bay of Bengal. The state with over 90 inhabitants is bordered by Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. Spicejet already operates flights from West-Bengal’s largest city Kolkata. The Indian low cost carrier currently operates a fleet of over 55 Boeing 737 Family and Bombardier Dash Q400 aircraft. Additionally, Spicejet has ordered 155 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and 25 Bombardier Dash Q400.
