Airports Fraport Brazil begins operations in Fortaleza and Porto Alegre

Over the course of airport privatizations, four Brazilian airports had offered to let external companies take over the airports operations. In March 2017, Fraport AG won the concessions for FOR and POA during a public auction. The concessions are valid for 25 years (POA), respectively 30 years (FOR).

Dr. Stefan Schulte, Fraport AG’s executive board chairman said: “We are proud to welcome these two ‘best-located’ gateways to the Fraport global portfolio.  With Porto Alegre and Fortaleza, we now have three airports in South America and a total of 30 airports where we are active worldwide.  Our mandate is to enhance the passenger experience while strengthening the role of these airports for their respective stakeholders and regions.”

Fraport stated, that they plan to invest over 185 million USD in the airport´s infrastructure and development. Previously, both airports were operated by Infraero. It is said, that Fraport spend over 256 million USD for both airports.

Andreea Pal, CEO of Fraport Brasil added: “We strongly believe in the potential of Fortaleza and Porto Alegre airports.  We are focusing our efforts on raising the attractiveness of these two airports through ongoing improvements in infrastructure and operational processes.”

Fortaleza’s Pinto Martins International Airport is located in North-Eastern Brazil and handled over 5.7 million passengers in 2016, which makes the airport the 12th biggest in Brazil.

Porto Alegre’s Salgado Filho International Airport serves as hub for the Brazilian carrier Azul and dispatched around 7.6 million passengers in 2016. Porto Alegre is located in the South of Brazil and is the 9th biggest airport in the country.
