According to Cuomo, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have reached an agreement on key terms with Delta Air Lines and JFK International Air Terminal, the operator of Terminal 4. This agreement sees the expansion of Terminal 4 and the consolidation of Delta´s operations there.

This agreement is still subject to board approval this week. Also, the Port Authority will finalize and enter into a lease amendment with JFK for the expansion and renovation of the arrival and departures hall in Terminal 4.

"The Terminal 4 expansion will be another milestone in the transformation of JFK Airport, with upgrades that will give passengers the world-class experience they expect when flying into New York," Governor Cuomo said. "When completed, our $13 billion project to modernize JFK will create a more unified airport and solidify New York's position as the premier entry point to our country."

In total, the project will cost approximately US$ 3.8 billion. More than 500,000 square feet will be added, as well as 16 new domestic narrowbody gates. Existing concourses will be renovated and roadway upgrades, which are expected to be completed by 2025, will allow better access for vehicles.

Delta will consolidate its operations in early 2023. By then, most of the construction is expected to be completed.

Roel Huinink, President and CEO of JFKIAT, operator of Terminal 4, said: "The expansion of Terminal 4 represents the next evolution of one of the world's most modern and efficient air terminals. T4 accounts for one-third of traffic for JFK, and by investing in this expansion, we will be able to continue driving innovation within the terminal, increase its capacity, and bring our best-in-class customer experience to the next level. We look forward to our continued partnership with Delta and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as we begin this exciting initiative to strengthen JFK's position as a world class airport."

JFK Airport is one of the busiest in the world and this latest commitment to modernize the facilities underlines its importance. The airport is a gateway for flights to Europe and destinations throughout the United States. It is an important hub for major American airlines.
