Two years after the Belgium VLM Airlines has ceased domestic operations at Friedrichshafen Airport, a new carrier has announced flights to Düsseldorf Airport. The Danish regional airline Sun Air will offer two daily flights, in the morning and in the evening, which should meet the demands of business travelers. The flights will be operated with a Dornier Do 328 Jet with 32 seats.

Additionally, Sun Air plans to connect Friedrichshafen with Hamburg after a successful start of its Düsseldorf-operations.

Claus-Dieter Wehr, managing director at Friedrichshafen Airport stated: “Sun Air is the ideal solution for the region and the regional economy. Sun Air’s service, with the flight times and the offered board service focuses on business travelers and will meet the regional demand.”

Sun Air will be the third carrier trying to develop successful domestic operations in Friedrichshafen. The former home carrier Intersky, which offered flights to Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf was forced to cease operations in December 2015. Some weeks later VLM Airlines took over the connections, but went bankrupt in June 2016.

As Sun Air is a franchise of British Airways, all flights will be sold via the British Airways website. With a fleet of 16 Dornier Do 328, Sun Air is the largest operator of the aircraft model. Compared to the former Intersky and VLM fleet, Sun Air will offer less seat capacity per flight. Intersky operated its flights with a Bombardier Dash 8 Q300 for 50 passengers and VLM operated a Fokker 50 with 50 seats.

Friedrichshafen Airport is a minor international airport with flight connections to several leisure destinations. Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines offer connecting flights to its hubs Frankfurt/Main and Istanbul. In 2017 over 500.000 passengers were handled at Friedrichshafen Airport.
