Industry Delta Air Lines orders 10 additional A330-900s

Airbus and Delta Air Lines have announced, that the carrier has firmed up an order for 10 additional Airbus A330-900 aircraft.

The major US-carrier will invest US$2,964 billion, according to Airbus´ average list prices. With this new order, Delta now has a total of 35 A330neo aircraft in the delivery backlog and the carrier furthermore underlines its growth ambitions for the near to medium term future.

Delta Chief Executive Officer Ed Bastian said: “The A330-900 is going to be an important addition to Delta’s fleet [...] Airbus has infused this next generation of the successful A330 family with new technology and features providing advanced levels of comfort for our passengers and significant operating cost reductions that will make our airline stronger in the decades to come.”

Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer added: “Delta has been endorsing the Airbus wide-body family from the outset by committing to both the A330 and the A350 [...] This reconfirmed endorsement by one of the world’s largest and most respected airlines validates the economic credentials of our versatile Airbus wide-body family in the most advanced and competitive environments.”

Delta´s A330-900s will be equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and furthermore incorporates technical and aerodynamic enhancements like new composite wingtips and state-of-the-art avionics. The aircraft will be more efficient and will generate more savings through reduced fuel burn.

In a three-class configuration, the A330-900 can accommodate 287 passengers. In high-density configuration, airlines can welcome up to 440 passengers on board. With a range of 7,200 nautical miles, the aircraft is well fitted for long-haul flights.

Airbus´ A330neo Family includes the A330-800 and A330-900. The manufacturer launched this aircraft programme back in July 2014. Just recently, Kuwait Airways has announced that it will order eight A330-800 aircraft.

By ordering the 10 A330-900s, Delta Air Lines has decided to defer 10 previously ordered A350-900XWBs to 2025-26. This will allow the airline to grow steadily and to accommodate Delta´s future strategy. In 2019 and 2020, Delta will take delivery of four A350s and currently operates with 11 XWB aircraft.

Delta Air Lines is a major US-airline and operates with a fleet of over 880 aircraft, including A319s, A320s, A321s, A330s, A350s, Boeing 737s, 757s, 767s and 777s. Recently, the carrier has become the first US-airline to receive an Airbus A220-100 aircraft
